اَلتَّوْفِيقُ مُمِدُّ العَقْلِ۔
God-given success is a supporter of the intellect.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: God-Given Success)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
God-given success is a supporter of the intellect.
This enlightening saying emphasizes the importance of divine guidance in enabling the intellect to reach its full potential. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (tawfiq) "تَوْفِيقُ" in the Hadith refers to the divine assistance and guidance that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His servants. It is a blessing that enables individuals to make the right choices and attain success in their endeavors. The term (mumidd) "مُمِدُّ" means to support or strengthen. Therefore, this Hadith highlights the role of divine guidance in enhancing the intellect and enabling it to flourish.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the concept of God-given success as a supporter of the intellect. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:123)
And Allah had certainly helped you at Badr when you were weak. So fear Allah; perhaps you will be grateful.
This verse illustrates how Allah's assistance enabled the Muslims to achieve victory in the Battle of Badr, despite their numerical inferiority. It demonstrates that divine support can empower the intellect to overcome challenges and achieve success.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 29:69)
And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.
This verse highlights that those who sincerely strive for Allah's pleasure will be granted His guidance. It emphasizes that divine assistance is bestowed upon those who actively seek it and engage in righteous actions. This guidance enhances their intellect and enables them to make sound decisions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that success is not solely dependent on human capabilities and intellect. Rather, it is a result of divine intervention and support. When Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grants His tawfiq, it elevates the intellect and enables individuals to make wise choices that lead to success in this world and the hereafter.
For example, consider a student who is preparing for an important exam. They may possess a high level of intelligence and knowledge, but without the divine assistance of tawfiq, they may struggle to perform well. However, when Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) blesses them with His guidance and support, their intellect is strengthened, and they are able to recall information effectively, solve complex problems, and excel in their exams.
Similarly, in matters of decision-making, individuals may face dilemmas where their intellect alone may not be sufficient to determine the best course of action. However, when they seek Allah's guidance through prayer, reflection, and seeking knowledge, they are granted tawfiq, which enables them to make choices that align with the teachings of Islam and lead to success in both this life and the hereafter.
It is important for Muslims to recognize the significance of seeking divine assistance in all aspects of their lives. By acknowledging that success is ultimately in the hands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we humble ourselves and rely on His guidance. This reliance on Allah's tawfiq not only enhances our intellect but also strengthens our faith and connection with Him.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the role of divine guidance in supporting the intellect and enabling success. Through the Quranic verses, we understand that Allah's tawfiq is granted to those who strive for His pleasure and seek His guidance. By recognizing the importance of relying on Allah's support, we can enhance our intellect, make wise decisions, and attain success in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us His tawfiq and bless us with success in all our endeavors.
