اَلتَّقْوى أنْ يَتَّقِيَ المَرْءُ كُلَّما يُؤْثِمُهُ۔
God-wariness is for a person to be cautious of all [the things] that could lead him towards sin.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: God-Wariness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
God-wariness is for a person to be cautious of all [the things] that could lead him towards sin.
This profound statement emphasizes the importance of taqwa, which can be translated as "God-wariness" or "piety." Taqwa is a central concept in Islam, and it refers to being conscious of Allah's presence and striving to avoid anything that displeases Him.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word "taqwa" comes from the root word "waqa," which means to protect or shield oneself. It implies a state of constant awareness and mindfulness of Allah's commands and prohibitions. The word "yattaqi" is derived from "taqwa" and means to be cautious or to guard against something. And the word "youthimuhu" means to commit a sin or to transgress the boundaries set by Allah.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:102)
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him]
This verse highlights the importance of taqwa and reminds us that it should be a fundamental aspect of our lives as Muslims.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 49:11)
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers
This verse highlights the importance of being cautious of our words and actions, as they can lead to sin and disobedience.
Now, let us reflect on the wise message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true taqwa lies in being cautious of everything that could potentially lead us towards sin. This encompasses not only the obvious sins but also the subtle actions, thoughts, and influences that may gradually erode our faith and distance us from Allah.
For example, being cautious of our company is essential. Surrounding ourselves with righteous individuals who inspire us to do good and remind us of our responsibilities towards Allah can strengthen our taqwa. Conversely, associating with those who engage in sinful behavior or have a negative influence can lead us astray.
Similarly, being cautious of our thoughts and intentions is crucial. Negative thoughts, envy, and arrogance can corrupt our hearts and lead us towards sinful actions. By constantly monitoring our inner state and striving to purify our intentions, we can safeguard ourselves from falling into sin.
Furthermore, being cautious of our time and how we utilize it is vital. Wasting time on idle pursuits or engaging in activities that are displeasing to Allah can diminish our taqwa. By prioritizing acts of worship, seeking knowledge, and engaging in beneficial activities, we can strengthen our relationship with Allah and protect ourselves from sin.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of taqwa in our lives as Muslims. It urges us to be cautious of all the things that could potentially lead us towards sin, whether they are obvious or subtle. By being mindful of our actions, thoughts, company, and time, we can strive to attain a higher level of taqwa and strengthen our relationship with Allah. May Allah grant us the ability to embody true taqwa and protect us from all forms of sin.
