عَلَيْكَ بِالعِفَّةِ فَإنَّها نِعْمَ القَرينُ۔
Espouse chastity, for indeed it is a good companion.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Chastity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of embracing chastity and purity in one's life. The word (alayka) "عَلَيْكَ" means "upon you" or "upon you is," indicating a command or recommendation directed towards the listener. The word (bil-'iffah) "بِالعِفَّةِ" refers to chastity, modesty, and purity. It encompasses the idea of restraining oneself from engaging in immoral or indecent behavior.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes chastity as (ni'ma al-qarin) "نِعْمَ القَرينُ", which can be translated as "a good companion." This analogy highlights the positive impact that embracing chastity can have on an individual's life. Just as a good companion brings about positive influences, protects one from harm, and guides them towards righteousness, chastity serves as a constant source of guidance and protection in navigating the challenges of life.
The importance of chastity is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:26), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best.
This verse highlights the significance of modesty and purity in one's attire and behavior. It encourages individuals to adorn themselves with righteousness, which includes embracing chastity.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands both men and women,
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
This verse emphasizes the importance of lowering one's gaze and guarding one's private parts, which are essential aspects of chastity. By doing so, individuals protect themselves from falling into sinful actions and maintain their purity.
The exegesis of this Hadith teaches us that embracing chastity is not only a personal virtue but also a means of safeguarding oneself from the negative consequences of immorality. Chastity acts as a shield against the temptations and distractions of this world, allowing individuals to maintain their focus on pleasing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His pleasure.
By adopting a chaste lifestyle, Muslims can cultivate a sense of self-discipline, self-control, and moral integrity. It enables them to resist the allure of illicit desires and maintain a pure heart and mind. Chastity also fosters healthy relationships, as it encourages individuals to treat others with respect, honor their boundaries, and uphold the sanctity of marriage and family.
Moreover, the practice of chastity has far-reaching consequences in society. It promotes a culture of modesty, decency, and moral values, which are essential for the well-being and harmony of communities. When individuals prioritize chastity, they contribute to the establishment of a virtuous society, free from the negative consequences of immorality, such as broken families, infidelity, and the objectification of individuals.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to embrace chastity in their lives. It highlights the importance of purity, modesty, and self-restraint, which are not only pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but also serve as a source of guidance and protection. By adhering to the principles of chastity, Muslims can navigate the challenges of life with integrity, maintain healthy relationships, and contribute to the establishment of a virtuous society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to embrace chastity and seek His pleasure in all aspects of our lives.
