اَلْبَغْيُ أَعْجَلُ عُقُوبَةً۔
Oppression brings the quickest punishment.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "البغي أعجل عقوبة" which translates to
Oppression brings the quickest punishment.
This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the severe consequences of oppression and injustice. To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into its exegesis in the light of the Quran.
The term (al-baghy) "البغي" refers to oppression, transgression, or wrongdoing. It encompasses any act that exceeds the boundaries of justice and fairness. Oppression can manifest in various forms, such as usurping the rights of others, inflicting harm, or denying people their due rights. It is a violation of the principles of equity and morality.
To understand the gravity of oppression, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly condemns this act and promises severe consequences for those who engage in it. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:25), Allah says,
And fear the trial which does not afflict exclusively those among you who have done wrong. And know that Allah is severe in penalty.
This verse emphasizes that the punishment for oppression is not limited to the wrongdoers alone but can affect the entire community.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:5), Allah warns,
And We wanted to confer favor upon those who were oppressed in the land and make them leaders and make them inheritors.
This verse highlights Allah's promise to uplift the oppressed and grant them leadership and inheritance. It signifies that even though the oppressed may suffer temporarily, their ultimate reward lies in the justice and honor bestowed upon them by Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
Oppression brings the quickest punishment,
serves as a reminder that the consequences of oppression are not delayed or distant but rather swift and immediate. The punishment for oppression may manifest in various ways, both in this world and the Hereafter.
In this world, we witness numerous examples of how oppression leads to its own downfall. History is replete with instances where tyrants and oppressors faced swift retribution, either through uprisings, revolutions, or the collapse of their empires. Their oppressive actions sow the seeds of their own destruction, as they create resentment and rebellion among the oppressed.
Moreover, the consequences of oppression extend beyond the physical realm. Oppression tarnishes the soul and distances one from the mercy and blessings of Allah. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:22), Allah says,
No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy.
This verse highlights that every act of oppression is recorded and will be brought forth for judgment.
In the Hereafter, the punishment for oppression will be even more severe. Allah is just, and He will hold each individual accountable for their actions. In Surah Al-An'am (6:165), Allah warns,
And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees [of rank] that He may try you through what He has given you. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse reminds us that Allah's punishment is swift, and He will ensure justice is served.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we understand that oppression not only harms the oppressed but also brings destruction upon the oppressors themselves. It is a reminder for Muslims to uphold justice, fairness, and compassion in all aspects of life. By doing so, we not only avoid the punishment of oppression but also contribute to a just and harmonious society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of oppression. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the severity of oppression and the swift punishment it brings. As Muslims, we must strive to eradicate oppression from our lives and work towards establishing justice and equity in society. May Allah guide us all to the path of righteousness and protect us from the perils of oppression.
