اَلْهَذَرُ مُقَرِّبٌ مِنَ الغِيَرِ۔
Idle talk takes one closer to [unpleasant] changes [in circumstances].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Idle Talk)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Al-hadharu muqarrabun min al-ghiyar.
This Hadith can be translated into English as,
Idle talk takes one closer to [unpleasant] changes [in circumstances].
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound Hadith in light of the Quran. The word "hadhar" refers to idle or vain talk, which includes any speech that lacks purpose, substance, or benefit. It encompasses gossip, backbiting, slander, and engaging in useless conversations that do not contribute positively to one's life or the lives of others. The word "muqarrabun" means to be brought closer or to draw near, while "ghiyar" refers to changes or alterations in circumstances.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking that which is good and beneficial. Idle talk, on the other hand, opens the door for Satan to sow discord and create divisions among people.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of refraining from engaging in idle talk that includes mockery, insults, and offensive language. Such behavior not only damages relationships but also leads to negative consequences in this life and the hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their speech and to avoid engaging in idle talk. Idle talk not only wastes valuable time and energy but also has detrimental effects on one's character, relationships, and overall well-being. It can lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and the deterioration of trust among individuals.
Moreover, idle talk distances us from the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the pursuit of knowledge. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Jumu'ah (62:9),
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
This verse highlights the importance of prioritizing the remembrance of Allah over worldly matters. Engaging in idle talk distracts us from the remembrance of Allah and hinders our spiritual growth.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of their speech and to avoid engaging in idle talk. The Quranic verses mentioned support the importance of speaking that which is good, refraining from mockery and insults, and prioritizing the remembrance of Allah. By being mindful of our words and focusing on meaningful conversations, we can foster positive relationships, maintain a peaceful environment, and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to speak with wisdom and righteousness.
