رُبَّ طَرَب يَعُودُ بِالحَربِ۔
Many a time jubilation turns into rage.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Jubilation)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Many a time jubilation turns into rage.
This concise statement carries a wise message about the unpredictable nature of human emotions and the potential consequences that can arise from them.
Let us begin by examining the key words in this Hadith. The word (tarab) "طَرَب" refers to a state of joy, happiness, or jubilation. It signifies a feeling of delight or contentment that one experiences in various situations. On the other hand, the word (harb) "حَرب" means anger, rage, or hostility. It represents a state of intense displeasure or fury that can arise within an individual.
To gain a deeper understanding of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding ridicule, insults, and offensive behavior towards others. It reminds us that judging others based on superficial factors can lead to negative consequences. Similarly, when we allow our jubilation to turn into rage, we risk harming others and causing discord within our communities.
Another relevant Quranic verse is found in Surah Al-Imran (3:159), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].
This verse highlights the importance of kindness, leniency, and forgiveness in our interactions with others. It emphasizes the need to control our emotions and respond to situations with wisdom and patience. If we allow our jubilation to transform into rage, we risk alienating others and losing their support and cooperation.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand that it serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of their emotions and to strive for emotional intelligence. It teaches us that although experiencing joy and happiness is natural, we must be mindful of how these emotions can quickly turn into anger and hostility if not managed properly.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and his words continue to guide and inspire Muslims to this day. Through this Hadith, he highlights the importance of self-control and the potential consequences of unchecked emotions. By being aware of our emotions, managing them effectively, and seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his progeny, we can strive to maintain harmony within ourselves and in our relationships with others.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to control our emotions and to seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives. Ameen.
