(Ghurar al-Hikam: Doubt And Misgiving)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he expresses his astonishment towards those who doubt the power of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) despite witnessing His magnificent creation. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

The key words in this Hadith are (yashukku) "يَشُكُّ" which means "to doubt" and (qudrati Allah) "قُدْرَةِ اللّهِ" which translates to

the power of Allah.

The word (ajibtu) "عَجِبْتُ" signifies amazement or astonishment. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expresses his astonishment at those who doubt the power of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) while witnessing His creation.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the power and ability of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). For instance, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:20)

Indeed, Allah is over all things competent

This verse highlights the all-encompassing power of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His ability to control and manage everything in the universe.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 2:26)

Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, 'What did Allah intend by this as an example?' He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient

This verse highlights the fact that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has the power to create even the tiniest of creatures, such as a mosquito, and use them as examples to guide or mislead people.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is amazed at those who doubt the power of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) despite witnessing His creation. This amazement stems from the fact that the creation itself is a testament to the power and ability of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The intricate design, balance, and order found in the universe, from the vastness of the galaxies to the complexity of the human body, all point towards a Creator who possesses unimaginable power and wisdom.

When we ponder upon the creation of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we are reminded of His infinite power and ability. The vastness of the universe, the intricacy of the human body, and the diversity of life on Earth are just a few examples of the wonders that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has created. These creations serve as a constant reminder of His existence and His ability to bring forth life from nothingness.

Moreover, doubting the power of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) can have serious consequences. It can lead to a lack of trust in His divine plan and a weakening of faith. When we doubt the power of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we limit our understanding of His capabilities and His ability to fulfill His promises. This doubt can hinder our spiritual growth and prevent us from fully surrendering to His will.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon the power and ability of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as evident in His creation. Doubting His power is not only illogical but also detrimental to our faith. By recognizing and acknowledging the power of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we strengthen our faith and deepen our connection with Him. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to have unwavering faith in His power and ability.
