(Ghurar al-Hikam: Ingratitude)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ كَفَرَ النِّعَمَ حَلَّتْ بِهِ النِّقَمُ۔

This can be translated as,

Whoever is ungrateful for blessings, [divine] retribution comes upon him.

In this impactful saying , Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the consequences of ingratitude towards the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.

The word (kafara) "كَفَرَ" means to deny or reject. In this context, it refers to the act of denying or being ungrateful for the blessings of Allah. It is important to note that ingratitude is not limited to outright denial, but also includes neglecting or taking the blessings for granted.

The word (an-niʿama) "النِّعَمَ" refers to the blessings and favors bestowed upon us by Allah. These blessings can be both tangible and intangible, encompassing all aspects of our lives, such as health, wealth, knowledge, and guidance.

The word (hallat) "حَلَّتْ" means to surround or encompass. In this context, it signifies the divine retribution that surrounds and engulfs the ungrateful individual. It is a consequence that befalls those who fail to appreciate and acknowledge the blessings bestowed upon them.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of gratitude and warns against ingratitude.

In Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah says,

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse clearly illustrates the consequences of ingratitude. When we fail to appreciate and acknowledge the blessings bestowed upon us, we risk losing them or facing divine punishment. Gratitude, on the other hand, leads to an increase in blessings and favors from Allah.

In Surah An-Nahl (16:18), Allah says,

And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

This verse reminds us of the countless blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us, which are too numerous to count. It serves as a reminder to be grateful for these blessings and to recognize the mercy and forgiveness of Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the importance of gratitude and warns against the consequences of ingratitude. When we fail to appreciate the blessings in our lives, we not only risk losing them but also invite divine retribution upon ourselves.

Gratitude is a fundamental aspect of our faith as Muslims. It is a means of recognizing and acknowledging the favors of Allah and expressing our thankfulness to Him. By cultivating an attitude of gratitude, we not only strengthen our relationship with Allah but also experience a greater sense of contentment and happiness in our lives.

Let us reflect upon this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah. May we never take these blessings for granted and may we always express our gratitude to our Creator.
