مَنِ اتَّخَذَ الطَّمَعَ شِعاراً جَرَّعَتْهُ الخَيْبَةُ مِراراً۔
Whoever takes covetousness as his attire, it makes him swallow failure repeatedly.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Covetousness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the dangers of covetousness and its detrimental effects on a person's life. The word used in the Hadith for covetousness is (at-tama'a) "الطَّمَعَ", which refers to an excessive desire for wealth, possessions, or power. It is a state of constantly wanting more, never being satisfied with what one has.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes covetousness as an attire, indicating that it becomes a defining characteristic of a person. When one adopts covetousness as their way of life, it consumes them and becomes a part of their identity. This attire of covetousness leads to the swallowing of failure repeatedly, symbolizing the continuous disappointment and dissatisfaction that one experiences in their pursuit of worldly desires.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of covetousness in several verses. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:9), Allah says,
And those who came after them say, 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.'
This verse highlights the importance of contentment and gratitude. Covetousness arises from a lack of gratitude for the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us. When we constantly desire more, we fail to appreciate the abundance that already exists in our lives. This ingratitude can lead to resentment towards others who have been blessed with more, causing division and discord within the Muslim community.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:96), Allah warns against the consequences of covetousness by recounting the story of the Israelites who were commanded not to covet the forbidden things. However, they failed to adhere to this commandment, and as a result, they were afflicted with humiliation and loss.
This story serves as a powerful reminder that covetousness not only leads to personal failure but also brings about negative consequences for the entire community. When individuals are consumed by their desires, they neglect their responsibilities towards others and become self-centered. This selfishness hinders the progress and unity of the Muslim ummah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and self-control in order to avoid falling into the trap of covetousness. By recognizing the dangers of excessive desire, we can strive to cultivate contentment and gratitude in our hearts. This will enable us to find peace and fulfillment in the blessings that Allah has already bestowed upon us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious of covetousness and its detrimental effects. By adopting an attitude of gratitude and contentment, we can protect ourselves from the constant cycle of disappointment and failure that comes with an insatiable desire for worldly possessions. May Allah guide us all to be content with what He has provided and grant us success in both this world and the Hereafter.
