مَنْ ضَعُفَتْ فِكْرَتُهُ قَوِيَتْ غِرَّتُهُ۔
One whose thinking is weak, his inattention [and gullibility] is strong.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Thinking And The Thinker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ ضَعُفَتْ فِكْرَتُهُ قَوِيَتْ غِرَّتُهُ۔
This can be translated as,
One whose thinking is weak, his inattention [and gullibility] is strong.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (da'ufat) "ضَعُفَتْ" refers to weakness or feebleness. It signifies a lack of strength and capability. (fikratuhu) "فِكْرَتُهُ" refers to one's thinking or intellect. It encompasses the ability to reason, analyze, and comprehend. (qawiyyat) "قَوِيَتْ" means strength or power. It denotes the opposite of weakness. Lastly, (ghirratuhu) "غِرَّتُهُ" refers to inattention or gullibility. It implies a lack of vigilance and discernment.
To understand the wise message of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and verifying information before accepting it. It encourages Muslims to be cautious and not to be easily swayed by rumors or false claims.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse reminds us to refrain from blindly following or believing in matters that we have no knowledge about. It highlights the significance of using our intellect and seeking knowledge before making judgments or decisions.
In light of these Quranic verses, we can understand the wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. The Hadith warns us about the dangers of having a weak intellect and being easily influenced by others. When one's thinking is feeble, they become more susceptible to being deceived, manipulated, or misguided. This can lead to making hasty judgments, spreading false information, or falling into harmful situations.
For instance, in today's era of social media, we often come across various news articles, videos, and messages that may not be accurate or reliable. If our thinking is weak, we may unquestioningly accept and share such information without verifying its authenticity. This can result in spreading misinformation and causing harm to others. On the other hand, if we possess a strong intellect, we will be more inclined to critically analyze the information, seek evidence, and make informed decisions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate and strengthen their intellects. It encourages us to engage in continuous learning, critical thinking, and reflection. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from falling into the trap of ignorance, gullibility, and misinformation. Moreover, a strong intellect enables us to make wise choices, contribute positively to society, and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of having a strong intellect and being vigilant in our thinking. It urges us to seek knowledge, verify information, and think critically before accepting or acting upon anything. By doing so, we can safeguard ourselves from being easily deceived or misguided, and we can contribute to the betterment of our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to strengthen our intellects and protect us from the pitfalls of ignorance.
