مُرُوَّةُ الرَّجُلِ صِدْقُ لِسانِهِ۔
The magnanimity of a person is [gauged by] the truthfulness of his speech.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Magnanimity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مُرُوَّةُ الرَّجُلِ صِدْقُ لِسانِهِ۔
This can be translated as,
The magnanimity of a person is [gauged by] the truthfulness of his speech.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in the light of the Quran.
The word (muruwwah) "مُرُوَّةُ" in this Hadith refers to the quality of magnanimity or nobility. It encompasses the virtues of generosity, honor, and integrity. It is a characteristic that reflects the true essence of a person's character and their ability to uphold noble values.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that the truthfulness of one's speech is a crucial indicator of their magnanimity. Truthfulness is not limited to mere honesty in words, but it extends to the sincerity and authenticity of one's intentions and actions. It is a comprehensive concept that encompasses all aspects of a person's life.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Tawbah (9:119),
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
This verse encourages Muslims to align themselves with those who are truthful, as it reflects their commitment to righteousness and their adherence to the teachings of Islam.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:119), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will say, 'This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness.'
This verse highlights the significance of truthfulness in the Hereafter, where those who were truthful in their words and actions will be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the truthfulness of one's speech is not only a reflection of their character but also a measure of their magnanimity. When a person consistently speaks the truth, they demonstrate their commitment to honesty, justice, and integrity. This quality elevates their status in the eyes of others and establishes a foundation of trust and respect.
Conversely, when a person lacks truthfulness in their speech, it diminishes their magnanimity. They may be perceived as deceitful, unreliable, and untrustworthy. Their words lose their impact and their character becomes questionable. This can have severe consequences in personal relationships, professional settings, and even in matters of faith.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of truthfulness in our lives as Muslims. It is not enough to merely speak the truth; we must strive to embody it in our actions, intentions, and interactions with others. By doing so, we uphold the values of Islam and contribute to the betterment of society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the magnanimity of a person is determined by the truthfulness of their speech. This impactful saying aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the significance of truthfulness in the life of a Muslim. Let us strive to be people of truth, upholding the values of honesty, integrity, and justice in all aspects of our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the path of truth and grant us the strength to always speak with sincerity and authenticity.
