— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Cognizance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ثَمَرَةُ المََعْرِفَةِ العُزُوفُ عَنْ دارِ الفَناءِ۔

This can be translated as,

The fruit of cognizance is becoming averse to the evanescent abode.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (thamaratu) "ثَمَرَةُ" refers to the fruit or outcome of something. (al-ma'rifah) "المََعْرِفَةِ" means knowledge or recognition. (al-'uzoof) "العُزُوفُ" signifies aversion or turning away. And (dar al-fana) "دارِ الفَناءِ" refers to the evanescent abode or the transient world.

To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),

Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children.

This verse highlights the temporary nature of worldly pursuits and the distractions they bring. It emphasizes that the true essence of life lies beyond the material realm.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Taghabun (64:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

The Day He will gather you for the Day of Assembly - that is the Day of Deprivation.

This verse reminds us that the ultimate gathering will be on the Day of Judgment, where worldly possessions and accomplishments will hold no value. It underscores the importance of focusing on the eternal life to come rather than being attached to the fleeting pleasures of this world.

Now, let us reflect on the impactful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. The "fruit of cognizance" refers to the outcome or result of true knowledge and understanding. It signifies the realization that the transient world is merely a passing phase, and the pursuit of worldly desires should not be the ultimate goal of a Muslim.

By becoming

averse to the evanescent abode,

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging us to detach ourselves from the materialistic aspects of this world and instead focus on the eternal realm. This does not mean completely abandoning our responsibilities or neglecting our worldly affairs. Rather, it calls for a shift in perspective, where we prioritize the hereafter and use the temporary world as a means to attain everlasting success.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to seek knowledge and understanding that leads to this realization. When we truly comprehend the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits, we become less attached to them and more focused on our spiritual growth and the pursuit of good deeds that will benefit us in the hereafter.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly reflect on the purpose of their existence and to strive for a balance between their worldly responsibilities and their spiritual journey. It motivates us to prioritize the eternal abode over the temporary one, knowing that our actions in this life will have consequences in the hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of recognizing the transient nature of this world and redirecting our focus towards the eternal realm. It urges us to seek knowledge and understanding that leads to detachment from worldly desires and a greater commitment to our spiritual growth. By doing so, we can attain the true fruit of cognizance and strive for everlasting success in the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to comprehend this message and guide us on the path of righteousness.
