Hadith #1941

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الجاهِلُ لا يَرْعَوي۔" This can be translated as,

The ignorant person does not desist [from sinning].

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful saying in light of the Quran.

The word (jahil) "جاهِلُ" refers to someone who is ignorant or lacks knowledge. This ignorance can manifest in various aspects of life, including religious knowledge, moral understanding, or even worldly affairs. It is important to note that this term does not imply a lack of intelligence, but rather a lack of knowledge or understanding in a specific area.

The word (yar'awi) "يَرْعَوي۔" is derived from the root word (ra'a) "رَعَا", which means to desist, abstain, or refrain from something. In this context, it refers to refraining from sinful actions or behaviors.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge and its impact on our actions in several verses. For example, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah says,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information before taking any action. It warns against acting out of ignorance, as it can lead to harm and regret. Similarly, in Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah says,

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

Here, Allah advises us not to engage in matters without proper knowledge. Acting without knowledge can lead to negative consequences and accountability in the hereafter. It is clear from these verses that ignorance can have detrimental effects on our actions and decisions.

Imam Ali's statement,

The ignorant person does not desist [from sinning],

sheds light on the consequences of ignorance in relation to sinful behavior. Ignorance can blind individuals to the consequences of their actions and prevent them from realizing the gravity of their sins. Without knowledge, they may continue to engage in sinful behavior without any remorse or desire to change.

Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge and strive for understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, and he emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge throughout his life. By acquiring knowledge, we can gain a deeper understanding of our religion, make informed decisions, and strive to refrain from sinful actions.
