مَرْكَبُ الهَوى مَرْكَبٌ مُرْد۔
Vain desire is a riding mount that throws down its rider.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَرْكَبُ الهَوى مَرْكَبٌ مُرْد۔
This can be translated into English as,
Vain desire is a riding mount that throws down its rider.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (markab) "مَرْكَبُ" refers to a riding mount or a means of transportation. (al-hawa) "الهَوى" refers to vain desires or whimsical inclinations. And (murd) "مُرْد" means to throw down or to cause one to fall.
To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of following our desires without restraint. In Surah Al-Qasas, verse 50, Allah says, (Quran 28:50)
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their own desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse highlights the consequences of blindly following one's desires. It leads to straying from the path of guidance and can result in spiritual downfall. Just as a riding mount that is not controlled properly can throw down its rider, similarly, vain desires can lead to our own destruction if we allow them to overpower us.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, warns us against the dangers of giving in to our whims and desires. He emphasizes the importance of self-control and discipline in order to avoid being thrown off the path of righteousness.
Let us reflect on the consequences of unchecked desires in our own lives. When we prioritize our own desires over the commandments of Allah, we risk compromising our faith and moral values. We may engage in actions that are displeasing to Allah, such as lying, cheating, or indulging in forbidden pleasures. These actions not only harm our relationship with Allah, but they also have negative consequences on our own well-being and the well-being of those around us.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening saying serves as a reminder for us to constantly evaluate our intentions and actions. We must strive to align our desires with the teachings of Islam and seek guidance from the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). By doing so, we can ensure that our desires are in line with what is pleasing to Allah and beneficial for our spiritual growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the dangers of vain desires and the importance of self-control. Just as a riding mount can throw down its rider, unchecked desires can lead us astray and cause our spiritual downfall. It is crucial for us, as Muslims, to constantly strive for self-discipline and align our desires with the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to overcome our vain desires and guide us on the path of righteousness.
