Hadith #6365

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أفْضَلُ العِبادَةِ اَلفِكْرُ۔" This can be translated as,

The best worship is contemplation.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (ibadah) "عِبادَةِ" refers to worship or devotion. It encompasses all acts of obedience and submission to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (afdalu) "أفْضَلُ" means the best or the most excellent. And the word (fikr) "فِكْرُ" refers to contemplation, reflection, or deep thought.

The importance of contemplation in Islam is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:191),

Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth, saying, 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

This verse highlights the significance of contemplating the creation of the heavens and the earth. It encourages Muslims to ponder over the signs of Allah's creation, which leads to a deeper understanding of His wisdom and power. Such contemplation is a form of worship that brings one closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:45), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.

This verse highlights the importance of the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in worship. Contemplation and reflection on the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) are integral parts of this remembrance. By engaging in deep thought and reflection, Muslims can gain a deeper understanding of their faith and strengthen their connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
