How befitting it is for a person to have a fixed time, when he is not distracted by anything, in which he holds his soul to account and looks at what he has earned for and against it in its night-time and daytime.

How befitting it is for a person to have a fixed time, when he is not...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of setting aside a specific time for self-reflection and self-accountability. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that it is highly appropriate for a person to have a dedicated hour or period of time during which they are not preoccupied by any distractions. This time should be utilized for introspection, where one evaluates their actions and assesses what they have gained or lost in terms of their spiritual growth and righteousness.

The key words in this Hadith are as follows:

1. (sa'ah) "ساعَةٌ" - which means "an hour" or "a fixed time". It signifies a specific period that a person should allocate for self-reflection and self-accountability.

2. (shaaghil) "شاغِلٌ" - which means "distracted" or "preoccupied". It refers to anything that diverts one's attention and prevents them from focusing on self-evaluation.

3. (yuhaasibu) "يُحاسِبُ" - which means

to hold oneself to account

or "to evaluate oneself". It implies a critical assessment of one's actions, intentions, and their alignment with the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance in this Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and accountability. Allah says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18):

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse highlights the necessity for individuals to constantly evaluate their actions and intentions, considering the consequences they may face in the Hereafter. It is crucial for Muslims to set aside a specific time, just as Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises, to engage in self-reflection and self-accountability.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ghashiyah (88:26), Allah says:

So remind, if the reminder should benefit.

This verse emphasizes the importance of reminding oneself and others about the significance of self-reflection and accountability. By setting aside a dedicated time for introspection, Muslims can remind themselves of their responsibilities and strive to improve their actions and intentions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance in this Hadith serves as a motivation for Muslims to actively engage in self-reflection. By regularly evaluating their actions, intentions, and the consequences thereof, individuals can identify areas for improvement and rectify any shortcomings. This self-accountability leads to a heightened sense of self-awareness and a deeper connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Moreover, the practice of self-reflection and self-accountability has profound consequences on an individual's spiritual growth and righteousness. By consistently assessing their actions and intentions, Muslims can strive to align themselves with the teachings of Islam and seek forgiveness for any shortcomings. This process of self-improvement ultimately leads to a stronger relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and a more fulfilling and purposeful life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of setting aside a specific time for self-reflection and self-accountability. This guidance aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasize the necessity of evaluating one's actions and intentions. By dedicating a fixed time for introspection, Muslims can actively engage in self-improvement, seek forgiveness for their shortcomings, and strengthen their relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to hold ourselves accountable and continuously strive for spiritual growth.
