The deeds of a person ought to be better than his words and his words should not be better than his actions.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of aligning our actions with our words. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, advises that a person's deeds should be superior to their words, and that their words should not surpass their actions.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their implications. The word (af'al) "أفْعالُ" refers to actions or deeds, while (aqwalih) "أقْوالِهِ" refers to words or statements. The word (ahsan) "أحْسَنَ" means better or superior. Therefore, the Hadith conveys the message that it is essential for a person's actions to be of a higher standard than their words.
This teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds support in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (Chapter 103, Verse 3):
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and advise each other to truth and advise each other to patience.
This verse emphasizes the importance of both belief and righteous actions. It highlights the significance of not only speaking the truth but also acting upon it.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (Chapter 49, Verse 11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of refraining from belittling others and making derogatory remarks. It encourages Muslims to focus on their own actions and character, rather than engaging in harmful speech.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their actions over their words. It urges us to embody the teachings of Islam through our conduct and behavior. It is not enough to merely speak about righteousness and goodness; we must actively strive to implement these values in our daily lives.
For example, if a person claims to be charitable but fails to donate to those in need or help the less fortunate, their words hold little value. On the other hand, if a person consistently engages in acts of kindness and generosity, their actions speak louder than their words. This Hadith encourages Muslims to be sincere in their intentions and to let their actions reflect their beliefs.
The consequences of neglecting this advice are significant. If a person's words consistently surpass their actions, they risk being labeled as hypocrites. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against hypocrisy in the Quran, stating in Surah Al-Munafiqun (Chapter 63, Verse 3):
They are the ones who say,
Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disband.
And to Allah belongs the depositories of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand.
Hypocrisy undermines the credibility of an individual and weakens the unity of the Muslim community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a valuable reminder for Muslims to ensure that their actions align with their words. It emphasizes the importance of sincerity and integrity in our conduct. By prioritizing righteous deeds over empty rhetoric, we can strive to embody the teachings of Islam and earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be people of action and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
