اَلتَّوَكُّلُ مِنْ قُوَّةِ اليَقينِ۔
Trusting in Allah stems from strength of certitude.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Putting Trust In Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
التَّوَكُّلُ مِنْ قُوَّةِ اليَقينِ
which translates to
Trusting in Allah stems from strength of certitude.
In this wise utterance, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of having a firm and unwavering belief in Allah, which is the foundation of true reliance and trust in Him.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (Trusting in Allah) "التَّوَكُّلُ" refers to placing complete reliance and dependence on Allah in all matters of life. It entails surrendering our affairs to Him, acknowledging that He is the ultimate source of guidance, support, and protection. (stems from strength of certitude) "مِنْ قُوَّةِ اليَقينِ" highlights the importance of having a strong and unwavering certainty in the existence, power, and wisdom of Allah.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support and reinforce the concept of trusting in Allah. For instance, Allah says in Surah At-Talaq (65:3),
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.
This verse emphasizes that when we place our trust in Allah, He becomes our ultimate source of support and sufficiency. We should not rely solely on our own abilities or the resources of this world, but rather trust in Allah's infinite power and wisdom.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:2), Allah says,
Indeed, the believers are only those whose hearts tremble at the mention of Allah. And when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.
This verse highlights the connection between trust in Allah and the strength of one's faith. When we have a deep and unshakable faith in Allah, our reliance on Him becomes stronger, and we find solace and comfort in turning to Him in all circumstances.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that true trust in Allah is not merely a superficial belief, but rather a conviction that is rooted in a strong and unwavering certitude. This certitude is built upon knowledge and understanding of Allah's attributes, His promises, and His past actions. It is nurtured through reflection on the signs of His creation and the lessons from the lives of the Prophets and righteous individuals.
When we possess a firm belief in Allah's existence, His mercy, and His ability to guide and protect us, our trust in Him becomes unshakable. We are motivated to turn to Him in times of need, knowing that He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, and the All-Powerful. This trust in Allah brings about a sense of tranquility and peace in our hearts, as we recognize that all outcomes are ultimately in His hands.
The consequences of trusting in Allah with a strong certitude are manifold. Firstly, it strengthens our relationship with Allah, as we acknowledge His sovereignty and our dependence on Him. Secondly, it instills in us a sense of hope and optimism, even in the face of challenges and difficulties. We know that Allah is always with us, guiding us and providing for us, and this knowledge gives us the strength to persevere.
Moreover, trusting in Allah with a strong certitude enables us to make better decisions in life. We are not overwhelmed by fear or anxiety, but rather make choices based on what is pleasing to Allah, knowing that He is the best of planners. This trust also protects us from falling into despair or relying on worldly means alone, as we recognize that true success and fulfillment come from Allah alone.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of trusting in Allah with a strong certitude. This trust is not blind faith, but rather a belief that is rooted in knowledge, understanding, and reflection. It is a belief that is supported by numerous Quranic verses that emphasize the significance of relying on Allah in all aspects of our lives. When we trust in Allah with a strong certitude, we experience the peace, strength, and guidance that comes from surrendering our affairs to Him. May Allah grant us the ability to trust in Him wholeheartedly and may He increase our certitude in Him.
