اَلتَّجْرِبَةُ تُثْمِرُ الإعْتِبارَ۔
Experience bears the fruit of learning.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Experience)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "التَّجْرِبَةُ تُثْمِرُ الإعْتِبارَ" which translates to
Experience bears the fruit of learning.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of practical knowledge gained through personal experiences.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (at-tajriba) "التَّجْرِبَةُ" refers to experience or practical knowledge gained through personal encounters or trials. It is the process of going through various situations and learning from them. (tuthmiru) "تُثْمِرُ" means to bear fruit or yield results. It signifies the positive outcomes and benefits that come from the process of gaining experience. (al-i'tibar) "الإعْتِبارَ" refers to learning or reflection upon the lessons derived from experience.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the wisdom behind this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:2),
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse emphasizes that trials and experiences are an integral part of our journey as Muslims. Through these tests, we gain practical knowledge and develop a deeper understanding of our faith.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse assures us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not place us in situations that are beyond our capabilities. Instead, He provides us with the opportunity to learn and grow through these experiences.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that knowledge gained through experience is invaluable. It is through facing challenges, overcoming obstacles, and reflecting upon our actions that we truly learn and grow. For example, a person may read about the importance of patience, but it is through experiencing difficult situations that they truly understand the value and application of patience in their lives.
Moreover, the process of gaining experience allows us to develop wisdom and make better decisions. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse encourages us to verify information and not act impulsively based on hearsay. Through experience, we learn to be cautious and discerning, avoiding hasty judgments that may lead to regret.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of gaining practical knowledge through personal experiences. It highlights the significance of reflecting upon these experiences and extracting valuable lessons from them. The Quranic verses mentioned support this notion, reminding us that trials and challenges are opportunities for growth and learning. As Muslims, we should strive to seek knowledge through both study and experience, as it is through this holistic approach that we can truly benefit and develop wisdom. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to learn from our experiences and apply that knowledge in our lives.
