The bane of scholars is love for leadership [and authority].

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Scholar)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The bane of scholars is love for leadership [and authority].

This Hadith highlights a significant challenge that scholars face, which is the temptation of seeking positions of power and authority. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns that this love for leadership can be detrimental to the integrity and effectiveness of scholars.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words. The word (bane) "آفَةُ" refers to something that causes harm or destruction. It signifies a negative consequence or outcome. The word (scholars) "العُلَماءِ" refers to those who possess knowledge and expertise in religious matters. And finally, the phrase (love for leadership [and authority]) "حُبُّ الرِّياسَةِ" refers to the desire and attachment to positions of power and authority.

This Hadith can be understood in light of several Quranic verses that emphasize the importance of sincerity and humility in seeking knowledge and leadership. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse reminds us that true nobility and superiority are not based on worldly positions or authority, but rather on righteousness and piety. Scholars should prioritize seeking knowledge for the sake of Allah and the betterment of the community, rather than for personal gain or recognition.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.

This verse emphasizes the importance of not desiring exaltedness or leadership in worldly affairs. Scholars should focus on their duty to guide and educate the community, without seeking personal power or authority. Their ultimate goal should be the attainment of success in the Hereafter, rather than worldly recognition or status.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns that when scholars become enamored with positions of leadership, it can lead to negative consequences. Firstly, their intentions may become tainted, as they may prioritize their own interests over the welfare of the community. This can result in a distortion of knowledge and a deviation from the true teachings of Islam.

Secondly, the love for leadership can lead to a sense of arrogance and superiority, which goes against the principles of humility and servitude that should be embodied by scholars. This can create divisions within the community and hinder the unity and progress of the ummah.

Thirdly, the pursuit of leadership can distract scholars from their primary duty of seeking knowledge and disseminating it to the people. Instead of focusing on their intellectual growth and spiritual development, they may become preoccupied with power struggles and political maneuvering.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to scholars of the dangers of seeking positions of leadership and authority. It highlights the importance of sincerity, humility, and selflessness in the pursuit of knowledge. Scholars should prioritize the well-being of the community and the dissemination of authentic knowledge, rather than personal gain or recognition. May Allah guide us all to seek knowledge with pure intentions and use it for the betterment of humanity.
