ثَمَرَةُ العَمَلِ السَّيِّءِ كَأصْلِهِ۔
The fruit of evil action is [evil] like its root.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
ثَمَرَةُ العَمَلِ السَّيِّءِ كَأصْلِهِ۔
which translates to
The fruit of evil action is [evil] like its root.
This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the consequences and nature of evil deeds.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (thamaratu) "ثَمَرَةُ" refers to the fruit or outcome of an action. (al-'amali as-sayyi') "العَمَلِ السَّيِّءِ" refers to evil actions or deeds. And (ka-aslihi) "كَأصْلِهِ" means "like its root."
This Hadith can be understood in light of several Quranic verses that emphasize the concept of reaping what one sows. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:30):
On the Day when every soul will find present what it did of good and what it did of evil, it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a great distance.
This verse highlights the accountability of our actions and the regret one will feel for the evil they have done.
Furthermore, in Surah Ibrahim (14:7), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse emphasizes the principle that good actions lead to positive outcomes, while evil actions result in negative consequences.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that the consequences of evil actions are inherently connected to their origins. Just as a tree's fruit is a reflection of its root, the outcome of our actions is a reflection of their nature. Evil actions, rooted in disobedience to Allah's commands, will bear fruits of negativity, suffering, and regret.
For example, if one engages in backbiting, spreading rumors, or engaging in dishonesty, the consequences will be a loss of trust, damaged relationships, and a tarnished reputation. Similarly, if one indulges in unlawful desires, such as theft or adultery, the consequences may include legal repercussions, guilt, and a tarnished spiritual state.
Conversely, good actions rooted in obedience to Allah's commands will bear fruits of righteousness, blessings, and contentment. Just as a tree that is nurtured with care and provided with good soil produces abundant and delicious fruits, our good actions will yield positive outcomes in this world and the hereafter.
In Surah Al-Insan (76:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises:
And there will circulate among them [servant] boys [especially] for them [to serve] as if they were pearls well-protected.
This verse highlights the rewards awaiting those who engage in righteous actions, emphasizing the concept of reaping what one sows.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of being mindful of our actions and their consequences. It serves as a motivation to strive for righteousness and to avoid evil, knowing that our actions have a direct impact on our lives in this world and the hereafter.
As Muslims, we should always strive to align our actions with the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his purified progeny. By doing so, we can ensure that our actions bear fruits of goodness, blessings, and eternal rewards, while avoiding the negative consequences of evil deeds.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to choose righteousness over evil, and may He bless us with the ability to bear fruits of goodness in all aspects of our lives.
