Hadith #9737

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

There are two things that should not be scorned: sickness and the poor relative.

This beautiful Hadith highlights the importance of compassion and empathy towards those who are in need, both physically and socially.

Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (maradh) "مَرَضُ" refers to sickness or illness, while (dhu al-qarabah al-muftaqir) "ذُوالقَرابَةِ" refers to a poor relative. And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to your destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah states, (Quran 17:23-24)

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small'

This verse highlights the importance of showing kindness and respect to our relatives, especially when they are in need or old age.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to have empathy and compassion towards those who are sick and in need.
