ما أخَذَ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ عَلَى الجاهِلِ أنْ يَتَعَلَّمَ حَتّى أخَذَ عَلَى العالِمِ أنْ يُعَلِّمَ۔
Allah, the Glorified, did not make it incumbent upon the ignorant one to learn until He had made it incumbent upon the learned to teach.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Scholar)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the importance of knowledge and the responsibility of the learned to impart it to others. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (ignorant) "جاهِلِ" and (learned) "عالِمِ". The word "جاهِلِ" refers to someone who lacks knowledge or understanding, while "عالِمِ" refers to a person who possesses knowledge and understanding. It is important to note that the term "عالِمِ" in this context does not only refer to someone who has acquired worldly knowledge, but also encompasses those who possess religious knowledge and understanding.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge in multiple verses. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse clearly highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah says,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse indicates that knowledge is a means of elevation and distinction in the sight of Allah. It is a blessing bestowed upon the believers, and it is their duty to utilize this knowledge for the betterment of themselves and others.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. He states that Allah did not make it obligatory upon the ignorant to learn until He made it obligatory upon the learned to teach. This statement highlights the responsibility of the learned individuals to share their knowledge with others.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes that knowledge should not be hoarded or kept exclusively for oneself. Rather, it should be disseminated and shared with others. The learned individuals have a duty to teach and guide the ignorant, helping them acquire knowledge and understanding.
This Hadith serves as a reminder to all Muslims, both Shia and Sunni, of the importance of seeking knowledge and spreading it to others. It encourages us to actively engage in the process of learning and teaching, for knowledge is a means of enlightenment and empowerment.
The consequences of neglecting this responsibility are grave. If the learned individuals fail to fulfill their duty of teaching, the ignorant ones will remain in darkness and ignorance. This perpetuates a cycle of ignorance that hinders the progress and development of individuals and societies.
On the other hand, when the learned individuals fulfill their obligation of teaching, they contribute to the intellectual and spiritual growth of the community. They empower others with knowledge, enabling them to make informed decisions, seek the truth, and lead a righteous life.
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge and the responsibility of the learned to teach. It serves as a reminder to all Muslims of the duty to seek knowledge and share it with others. By fulfilling this responsibility, we contribute to the betterment of ourselves, our communities, and society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to seek knowledge and fulfill our duty of teaching.
