Hadith #3449

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The cornerstone of hypocrisy is treachery.

This impactful saying highlights the essence of hypocrisy and its root cause. To understand this Hadith in depth, let us delve into the meanings of its key words.

The word "nifaq" is commonly translated as "hypocrisy." It refers to the act of pretending to have faith while concealing disbelief or insincerity. Hypocrisy is a grave sin in Islam, as it undermines the sincerity and integrity of a Muslim's faith. The word "khianah" means "treachery" or "betrayal." It signifies the act of breaking trust, deceiving others, or acting dishonestly.

To shed light on the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against hypocrisy in numerous verses, emphasizing the importance of sincerity and integrity in one's faith. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:8-9)

And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers. They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not

This verse highlights the deceptive nature of hypocrisy. Those who claim to believe in Allah and the Day of Judgment, yet harbor disbelief in their hearts, are only deceiving themselves. Their treacherous actions are a reflection of their inner hypocrisy. Allah further warns against hypocrisy in Surah Al-Munafiqun, stating, (Quran 4:145)

Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire - and never will you find for them a helper

Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement. He states that treachery is the cornerstone of hypocrisy. This means that treachery is the foundation upon which hypocrisy is built. When a person betrays the trust of others, they are essentially betraying the trust of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ).
