Hadith #9582

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

رُبَّ مَلُوم ولاذَنْبَ لَهُ۔

This can be translated as:

Many a person who is reproached has done nothing wrong.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (rubba) "رُبَّ" means "many a" or "often." It emphasizes the frequency of a certain occurrence. (maloom) "مَلُوم" refers to someone who is reproached, blamed, or criticized. And (la dhanba lahu) "لاذَنْبَ لَهُ" means

has done nothing wrong

or "is innocent."

To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah An-Nur, verse 11:

Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment.

This verse highlights the importance of not hastily judging others based on false accusations or reproach. It teaches us that sometimes, what may appear as a negative situation can actually be a blessing in disguise. Just as the verse states, the falsehood brought by a group among the believers was ultimately beneficial for the community, as it exposed the wrongdoers and allowed for their appropriate punishment.

Similarly, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that there are individuals who are unjustly reproached, blamed, or criticized, despite their innocence. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 6, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us:

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before accepting it as truth and acting upon it. It warns against spreading false accusations or harming others based on incomplete or inaccurate knowledge. It encourages us to be diligent in seeking the truth and avoiding actions that we may later regret.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the consequences of unjust reproach. It can lead to the tarnishing of someone's reputation, the breakdown of relationships, and the perpetuation of falsehood.
