لِسانُ الحالِ أصْدَقُ مِنْ لِسانِ المَقالِ۔
The tongue of action is truer than the tongue of speech.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The tongue of action is truer than the tongue of speech.
This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of actions over mere words. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (lisan) "لِسانُ" refers to the tongue, which is the organ of speech. It symbolizes the power of expression and communication. The word (al-hal) "الحالِ" means action or behavior, while (al-maqal) "المَقالِ" means speech or words. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting that actions speak louder and are more truthful than words.
This concept is beautifully echoed in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:114),
They believe in Allah and the Last Day, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous.
This verse emphasizes the importance of not only believing in Allah and the Day of Judgment but also actively promoting righteousness and preventing evil. It is through our actions that we truly demonstrate our faith and sincerity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of treating others with respect and avoiding hurtful speech. Our actions towards others should be characterized by kindness, compassion, and empathy.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is reminding us that our actions have a profound impact on ourselves and those around us. Our words may be eloquent and persuasive, but if they are not backed by corresponding actions, they lose their credibility. For example, if someone claims to be charitable but does not actually give to those in need, their words become empty and hollow. On the other hand, someone who quietly and consistently performs acts of charity without boasting or seeking recognition, their actions speak volumes about their character and sincerity.
This Hadith also serves as a reminder of the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. It prompts us to examine our own behavior and strive to align our actions with our words. It encourages us to be people of integrity, whose actions are a true reflection of our beliefs and values.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that actions are more powerful and truthful than mere words. It reminds us to prioritize our deeds and ensure that they align with our speech. Let us strive to be people of action, whose behavior is a testament to our faith and devotion. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody this noble teaching and may He guide us on the path of righteousness.
