Hadith #6588

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العدل حياة الأحكام" which translates to

Justice is the life of decrees.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the essential role of justice in the functioning and sustenance of any system of governance or society.

The word (adl) "عدل" in Arabic refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It embodies the concept of treating others with equality and ensuring that everyone receives their due rights. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse highlights the importance of being just even in difficult circumstances, even if it means going against one's own interests or the interests of loved ones. It emphasizes the impartiality and integrity that justice demands, regardless of social status or personal relationships.

Imam Ali's statement,

Justice is the life of decrees,

Without justice, decrees and laws lose their effectiveness and legitimacy. When justice is compromised, societies become plagued with corruption, inequality, and oppression.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and understanding of Islamic principles, and his emphasis on justice was a reflection of his own character. He demonstrated this through his actions, such as when he famously said,

People are of two types: they are either your brothers in faith or your equals in humanity.
