مَنْ جارَ مُلْكَهُ (في مُلْكِهِ) تَمَنَّى النّاسُ هُلْكَهُ۔
One who is tyrannical in his kingdom, the people wish for his annihilation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Kings And Rulers)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man jara mulkahu (fi mulkihi) taman-na an-nasu hul-kahu.
This Hadith highlights the consequences of tyranny and oppression in a kingdom or leadership position. The word "jara" means to be tyrannical or oppressive, while "mulk" refers to kingdom or authority. The phrase "taman-na an-nasu hul-kahu" translates to
the people wish for his annihilation.
To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can refer to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes justice, fairness, and compassion in leadership. In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah says, (Quran 57:25)
Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice
This verse highlights the importance of maintaining justice in all aspects of life, including governance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah states, (Quran 5:8)
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do
This verse emphasizes the obligation of Muslims to uphold justice, even if it goes against personal inclinations or biases.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a warning against the consequences of tyranny and oppression. When a leader abuses their authority and oppresses the people, it creates an atmosphere of fear, injustice, and discontent. The people, who are subjected to such tyranny, naturally desire liberation from their oppressor. This desire for liberation can manifest in various ways, including wishing for the annihilation of the tyrant.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, understood the importance of just leadership. He recognized that a tyrannical ruler not only brings harm upon themselves but also invites the wrath and resentment of the people. This Hadith serves as a reminder to leaders that their actions have consequences and that they should govern with justice, compassion, and fairness.
The consequences of tyranny and oppression can be seen throughout history. When leaders abuse their power and disregard the rights of their subjects, it often leads to uprisings, revolutions, and the downfall of oppressive regimes. The people, who have been oppressed, eventually rise up against their oppressors, seeking justice and freedom.
As Muslims, we are reminded by this Hadith and the Quranic verses mentioned above to strive for justice and fairness in all aspects of our lives, including our interactions with others and our roles as leaders or followers. We should always be mindful of the consequences of our actions and the impact they have on those around us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against the tyranny and oppression that can occur in a kingdom or leadership position. It highlights the consequences of such behavior, as the people will eventually wish for the annihilation of the tyrant. This Hadith aligns with the Quranic teachings of justice and fairness, emphasizing the importance of just leadership and the negative consequences of oppression. May Allah guide us all to be just and compassionate leaders, and may He protect us from the harm of oppression.
