إذا أحَبَّ اللّهُ عَبْداً ألْهَمَهُ الصِّدْقَ۔
When Allah loves a servant, He inspires him with truth.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Servants)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إذا أحَبَّ اللّهُ عَبْداً ألْهَمَهُ الصِّدْقَ۔
This can be translated as,
When Allah loves a servant, He inspires him with truth.
Let us delve into the meanings of some important words in this Hadith. The word (loves) "أحَبَّ" signifies a deep and sincere affection from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) towards His servant. It is a love that encompasses mercy, guidance, and blessings. The word (servant) "عَبْداً" refers to any individual who submits themselves to the will of Allah and worships Him alone. The word (inspires) "ألْهَمَهُ" implies that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instills within the heart and mind of His beloved servant the ability to discern and embrace the truth. And finally, the word (truth) "الصِّدْقَ" refers to the true and authentic understanding of the divine message and the ability to act upon it.
To understand the meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 151:
We have sent among you a Messenger from yourselves, reciting to you Our verses and purifying you and teaching you the Book and wisdom and teaching you that which you did not know.
This verse highlights the role of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as the Messenger of Allah, who was sent to guide humanity, purify their souls, and teach them the Book of Allah. When Allah loves a servant, He blesses them with the ability to comprehend the truth conveyed by His Messenger and the Quran.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 7, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allah has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance, and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided.
This verse emphasizes that true guidance and love from Allah are manifested in the hearts of the believers, making faith beloved to them and detesting disbelief and disobedience. When Allah loves a servant, He instills in their heart a deep love for the truth and a disdain for falsehood.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) sheds light on the profound relationship between Allah's love and the inspiration of truth. When Allah loves a servant, He grants them the ability to recognize and embrace the truth in all aspects of life. This divine inspiration allows the servant to discern right from wrong, to make sound judgments, and to act in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
The consequences of being inspired with truth by Allah's love are immense. The servant becomes a beacon of guidance and righteousness, as their actions and words are rooted in the truth. They become a source of inspiration for others, leading them towards the path of righteousness and pleasing Allah. The love of Allah and the inspiration of truth also provide the servant with inner peace, contentment, and a sense of purpose in life. They are guided by the light of divine truth, which illuminates their path and protects them from the darkness of ignorance and falsehood.
Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of seeking Allah's love and striving to be among His beloved servants. This can be achieved through sincere devotion, obedience to His commands, and seeking knowledge of the truth. We should constantly strive to purify our hearts and minds, so that we may be receptive to the divine inspiration of truth from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we can become beacons of guidance and righteousness in our communities, spreading the light of Islam and inspiring others to seek the truth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when Allah loves a servant, He blesses them with the inspiration of truth. This divine inspiration allows the servant to discern and embrace the truth, leading them to righteousness and guidance. It is through Allah's love and the inspiration of truth that the servant becomes a source of guidance and a reflection of the divine light. May Allah grant us His love and inspire us with the truth, so that we may be among His beloved servants.
