رُبَّ زاجِر غَيْرُ مُزْدَجِر۔
Many a preventer [of evil] does not prevent himself [from it].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Admonition)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
رُبَّ زاجِر غَيْرُ مُزْدَجِر۔
This can be translated as:
Many a preventer [of evil] does not prevent himself [from it].
Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (zaajir) "زاجِر" refers to someone who admonishes or reproaches others, warning them against evil or wrongdoing. The word (ghayru) "غَيْرُ" means "other than" or "besides," and (muzdajir) "مُزْدَجِر" means
he does not admonish himself.
To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18):
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-accountability. It reminds us that we should not only admonish others but also admonish ourselves, constantly striving to improve our own actions and intentions.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:44), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
This verse highlights the danger of neglecting our own spiritual development while focusing on guiding others. It serves as a reminder that we should not be hypocritical in our actions, but rather strive to align our own behavior with the guidance we impart to others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith draws our attention to the fact that there are individuals who may be quick to advise and admonish others, yet fail to apply the same principles to themselves. They may be passionate about preventing evil in society, but neglect their own spiritual growth and purification.
This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to engage in self-reflection and self-improvement. It urges us to be cautious of our own actions and intentions before we rush to correct others. It encourages us to cultivate self-awareness and humility, recognizing that we are all prone to mistakes and shortcomings.
By internalizing the message of this Hadith, we can avoid falling into the trap of hypocrisy and ensure that our efforts to prevent evil are rooted in sincerity and self-accountability. It prompts us to constantly evaluate our own behavior, seeking to align it with the teachings of Islam and the guidance of the Quran.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true prevention of evil begins with ourselves. It calls upon us to be vigilant in our own self-improvement and to avoid the pitfalls of hypocrisy. By embodying the principles of self-reflection and self-accountability, we can strive to be sincere and effective agents of positive change in our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to implement the teachings of this Hadith in our lives.
