Verily, the beggar is a messenger of Allah, so one who gives to him gives to Allah and one who withholds from him, withholds from Allah, the Glorified.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully describes the status and significance of the beggar in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). He states that the beggar is indeed a messenger of Allah, emphasizing the importance of showing kindness, compassion, and generosity towards those in need.

The word (miskeen) "مِسْكِينَ" in Arabic refers to someone who is in a state of poverty or need. It encompasses those who are financially deprived, socially marginalized, or lacking essential resources for a dignified life. The term (rasul) "رَسُولُ" means a messenger or an envoy. Therefore, the hadith highlights that the beggar, despite their outward appearance, carries a divine message from Allah.

To understand the significance of this hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of charity, kindness, and helping those in need. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:43)

And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].

Here, the act of giving zakah, which is a form of obligatory charity, is mentioned alongside the act of prayer, highlighting its significance in Islam.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'un, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) condemns those who neglect the rights of the needy, saying, (Quran 107:4-7)

So woe to those who pray [but] who are heedless of their prayer - those who make show [of their deeds] and withhold [simple] assistance.

This verse serves as a reminder that true faith is not limited to mere rituals but encompasses acts of kindness and support for those less fortunate.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith further emphasizes the consequences of our actions towards the beggar. When we give to the beggar, we are not only fulfilling their immediate needs but also fulfilling the command of Allah. By doing so, we are giving to Allah Himself, as He is the ultimate provider and sustainer. On the other hand, when we withhold from the beggar, we are depriving them of their rights and, in turn, withholding from Allah.

This hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be compassionate and generous towards those in need. It encourages us to view the beggar as a means of connecting with Allah and an opportunity to earn His pleasure. By giving to the beggar, we are not only fulfilling our duty towards our fellow human beings but also strengthening our relationship with our Creator.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) enlightening words also highlight the importance of recognizing the hidden wisdom and divine purpose behind every encounter with those in need. When we encounter a beggar, it is an opportunity for us to reflect on our own blessings and express gratitude to Allah for His countless favors upon us. It is a chance to humble ourselves and recognize that our wealth and resources are ultimately entrusted to us by Allah, and we are merely His stewards.

In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be compassionate, generous, and mindful of the rights of the needy. It highlights the significance of viewing the beggar as a messenger of Allah and the consequences of our actions towards them. By giving to the beggar, we are not only fulfilling their immediate needs but also fulfilling the command of Allah and strengthening our relationship with Him. May Allah guide us to be more compassionate and generous towards those in need, and may He accept our efforts and grant us His mercy and blessings.
