اَلعَدْلُ قِوامُ الرَّعِيَّةِ (البَرِيَّةِ)۔
Justice is the mainstay of the populace (or of the creation).
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العَدْلُ قِوامُ الرَّعِيَّةِ (البَرِيَّةِ)
which translates to
Justice is the mainstay of the populace (or of the creation).
This enlightening saying emphasizes the pivotal role of justice in maintaining the well-being and harmony of society.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (justice) "العَدْلُ" refers to fairness, equity, and upholding what is right. It entails treating others with equality, ensuring their rights are protected, and refraining from any form of oppression or discrimination. (mainstay) "قِوامُ" signifies the foundation or pillar upon which something relies for support and stability. (the populace or the creation) "الرَّعِيَّةِ" encompasses all individuals, regardless of their social status, ethnicity, or religious affiliation.
To further comprehend the significance of justice, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:25), Allah says,
Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.
This verse highlights that the messengers were sent with divine scriptures and the balance of justice to guide humanity towards maintaining justice in all aspects of life.
Additionally, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah commands the believers,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice even when it may go against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones. It underscores the principle that justice should never be compromised, regardless of the circumstances.
The exegesis of this Hadith reveals the profound wisdom and guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Justice serves as the cornerstone of a just and prosperous society. When justice is upheld, people's rights are protected, and harmony prevails. Conversely, when justice is neglected, oppression, inequality, and social unrest become prevalent.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on justice is rooted in his deep knowledge and understanding of the teachings of Islam. His life is a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice. During his caliphate, he established a just system of governance, where the rights of all individuals, regardless of their social status, were protected. He was known for his fair and equitable judgments, even if it meant ruling against his own interests or those of his close associates.
The consequences of upholding justice are far-reaching. It fosters a sense of security, trust, and unity within society. When people feel that their rights are protected and that they are treated fairly, they are more likely to contribute positively to their communities. On the other hand, the consequences of neglecting justice are dire. It leads to resentment, social divisions, and a breakdown of societal norms.
Reflecting upon this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of their duty to uphold justice in all aspects of their lives. Whether it is in personal relationships, professional endeavors, or societal interactions, justice should be the guiding principle. We must strive to treat others with fairness, equality, and respect, regardless of their background or beliefs. By doing so, we contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society, as exemplified by the teachings of Islam and the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to uphold justice in all aspects of our lives and enable us to follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Ameen.
