There is no reason with lust.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لاعَقْلَ مَعَ شَهْوَة۔" This concise statement carries a beautiful message about the relationship between reason and desire. Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith.

The word (aql) "عَقْلَ" refers to reason, intellect, or rationality. It is the faculty of the mind that enables us to think, understand, and make sound judgments. It is the tool through which we distinguish right from wrong and make decisions based on wisdom and knowledge.

On the other hand, (shahwah) "شَهْوَة" refers to lust, desire, or passion. It represents the intense inclination towards fulfilling one's physical or emotional desires, often driven by the lower self or the ego.

Now, let us turn to the Quran to find verses that shed light on the relationship between reason and desire. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Yusuf (12:53),

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.

This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil desires, which can cloud the judgment of the intellect.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

This verse emphasizes the importance of aligning our desires with divine guidance, as following our own whims and desires can lead us astray from the path of righteousness.

Now, let us reflect on the significance of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. He is highlighting the fact that reason and lust are incompatible. When the intellect is overpowered by desires, it loses its ability to make sound judgments and distinguish between right and wrong. Lust blinds the intellect, leading to impulsive actions and decisions that may be detrimental to our spiritual and moral well-being.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize reason over desire. We must strive to cultivate a strong intellect that is guided by divine teachings and principles. By doing so, we can resist the temptations of our lower selves and make choices that are in line with the teachings of Islam.

For example, when faced with the temptation to engage in unlawful relationships, reason reminds us of the sanctity of marriage and the importance of preserving our chastity. When tempted to indulge in excessive materialism, reason reminds us of the transient nature of worldly possessions and the importance of seeking contentment through spiritual fulfillment.

The consequences of disregarding reason in favor of lust can be severe. It can lead to the erosion of moral values, the breakdown of relationships, and the loss of spiritual growth. By prioritizing reason, we can avoid the pitfalls of impulsive behavior and make choices that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "لاعَقْلَ مَعَ شَهْوَة۔" serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize reason over desire. It highlights the incompatibility between the intellect and lust, emphasizing the importance of aligning our desires with divine guidance. By cultivating a strong intellect guided by the teachings of Islam, we can make sound judgments and avoid the pitfalls of impulsive behavior. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to prioritize reason and overcome our base desires.
